Switch
Rethinking personal and
shared last mile mobility
The Switch Electric Scooter is a personal mobility vehicle that is compact and lightweight, feature-rich, and never stopping - with the support of its battery station network.
The Problem
-
We found that personal scooters were unwieldy to carry due to the weight of the battery and motor distributed across a large footprint even when folded.
-
Scooters offered by sharing apps are usually found littering the streets due to negligence, making them an inconvenience to those not using them.
-
Both personal and shared options are a source of range anxiety due to charge and battery degradation.
Scooters from sharing apps lack ownership and responsibility
Solving for portability and ease of use
Using basic volumetric models, we explored several packaging options to solve for the smallest carrying size as well as easy of folding and unfolding.

Helpful app-connected smart screen
We designed a smart screen that guides you to your destination while providing useful information like your arrival time, speedometer, range and battery status.
Fully collapsible design significantly reduces the footprint of Switch when not in use
The telescoping base and handle combined with the folding mechanism designed around the front wheel, allows the scooter to be completely folded onto itself. To ensure that the package is as compact as possible, the rear wheel nests into a slot on the handle.
Fingerprint unlock
Once unlocked using the button below the handlebar, the scooter swiftly unfolds, keeping you on the move.
Hands-free carrying via backpack attachment
The battery capacity on Switch has been reduced to lower its weight. This reduced weight combined with its small form factor allows you to attach your scooter onto your backpack for a comfortable carrying experience. This is keeps your hands free on public transport which is essential.
Own the scooter, rent the battery
Hot-swappable batteries allow you to exchange a depleted battery for a fully charged one at a Battery station. The batteries are charged in the station and kept ready for the next rider. Strategically placed battery stations around the city can allow you to keep going all day without the downtime of charging.
This solution of owning the scooter and renting the battery rids the sidewalks of the hundreds of badly arranged scooters. What is seen in its place is a neat tower containing several batteries that can service a greater number of people.
